Rotary Peace Fellowship: Conflict Resolution and International Development
The Rotary Peace Fellowship offers comprehensive support for professionals dedicated to conflict prevention, resolution, and sustainable development worldwide. Sponsored by Rotary International, this fellowship provides full funding for master’s degrees or professional certificates at prestigious partner universities designated as Rotary Peace Centers. Fellows study alongside cohorts of like-minded professionals from diverse countries, creating a global learning community. The program integrates academic training with practical field experience, preparing graduates for leadership roles in peacebuilding and development organizations.
Academic Programs and Field Experience
Master’s degree fellows spend 15-24 months at one of seven partner universities, including institutions in Japan, the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, and Sweden. The curriculum combines peace studies with related disciplines including international relations, sustainable development, public health, and education. Professional development certificate fellows participate in an intensive three-month program at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, designed for mid-career professionals seeking to enhance their practical skills without interrupting their careers long-term. Applied field experience constitutes a critical component, with fellows undertaking projects with organizations working in conflict areas or development settings. The program deliberately creates cohorts representing diverse nationalities, professional backgrounds, and perspectives to enrich the learning environment through peer exchange. Regular seminars with visiting practitioners provide insights into current challenges and innovations in peacebuilding practice. Fellows participate in Rotary events worldwide, connecting with local Rotarians committed to community service and international understanding. Many fellows report that the network of Rotary clubs provides invaluable support both during their fellowship and throughout their subsequent careers. The program emphasizes practical application of academic knowledge, with most fellows implementing peace initiatives during and immediately after their fellowship period.
Fellowship Impact and Alumni Network
Since the program’s inception in 2002, over 1,400 fellows from more than 115 countries have created a global network of peace practitioners working across sectors. Alumni serve in key positions within the United Nations, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and educational institutions worldwide. The fellowship experience frequently leads to collaborative projects among alumni addressing transnational challenges requiring coordinated international responses. The Rotary Foundation provides ongoing professional development and networking opportunities for alumni throughout their careers.
